Making the Most of the Long Cold Winter
Winters are traditionally quiet times in Lake Nebagamon. In the early days, residents cleared a patch of snow from the ice and skated. But modern
ice fishing contests and snowmobile outings don't compare to the elaborate ice
carnivals devised by local businessmen beginning in 1915to encourage
tourism. An elaborate arch made of ice greeted passengers at the
station who crowded the village to see the ice palace ,
a rather amazing architectural feat. Then they could skate in the shelter of the pavillion
or tobaggan down a long slide and out across the ice.
